Herb rice is a versatile and flavorful side dish that pairs well with a wide variety of main courses. The specific herbs used will influence the flavor profile, but generally, herb rice offers a fresh, aromatic complement to many meals. Here are some wonderful things that herb rice goes with:

Proteins:

  • Chicken: Roasted, grilled, baked, or pan-fried chicken is a classic pairing. The herbs in the rice can echo or contrast the seasonings on the chicken. Lemon-herb rice is particularly popular with chicken.

  • Fish: Flaky white fish like cod, tilapia, or snapper are excellent with herb rice, especially those with lemon, dill, or parsley. Salmon also pairs well, especially with Mediterranean-inspired herb combinations.

  • Shrimp: Grilled, sautéed, or baked shrimp is delicious served over a bed of flavorful herb rice.

  • Pork: Roasted pork tenderloin, pork chops, or even pulled pork can be nicely balanced by the freshness of herb rice. Rosemary and thyme are great herbs for pork.

  • Lamb: Herb rice, particularly with rosemary and mint, is a fantastic accompaniment to roasted or grilled lamb.
  • Beef: While perhaps not as common as with other proteins, herb rice can work with certain beef preparations, such as a simple grilled steak or beef stew (where the herbs in the rice can complement the stew's flavors).
  • Tofu or Tempeh: For vegetarian and vegan options, herb rice provides a flavorful base for grilled, baked, or pan-fried tofu or tempeh.

Vegetables:

  • Roasted Vegetables: The freshness of herb rice provides a lovely contrast to the caramelized flavors of roasted vegetables like broccoli, carrots, zucchini, and bell peppers.
  • Steamed or Sautéed Vegetables: A simple side of steamed green beans, asparagus, or sautéed spinach can be elevated when served with flavorful herb rice.
  • Stuffed Vegetables: Herb rice can be used as a delicious filling for stuffed bell peppers, tomatoes, or zucchini.

Sauces and Dressings:

  • Light Sauces: Herb rice pairs well with light sauces like lemon butter sauce, pesto, or a simple pan sauce made with wine and herbs.
  • Yogurt-Based Sauces: A dollop of plain yogurt, tzatziki, or a mint-yogurt sauce can be a refreshing addition to herb rice, especially when served with grilled meats.
  • Vinaigrettes: Cooled herb rice can be used as a base for a flavorful rice salad with a light vinaigrette and chopped vegetables.
